There are question marks over the fitness of full-back pair Achraf Hakimi and Noussair Mazraoui. The former was withdrawn early in the last game but he should be fit for the last game of the group stage. Predicted line-upsCanada (3-4-3): Borjan, Johnston, Vitoria, Miller; Laryea, Kone, Eustaquio, Davies; Buchanan, David, Hoilett. Morocco (4-3-3): Bounou, Hakimi, Aguerd, Saiss, Mazraoui; Amrabat, Amallah, Ounahi; Ziyech, En-Nesyri, Boufal. The story so farCanada really shouldn’t be in a position where they are already out of the World Cup heading into the final group game.

Granted, they were totally outplayed by Croatia in their last game but they were brilliant against Belgium and came away empty handed from a game they should have won. When Alphonso Davies scored inside two minutes in the last game, a nation started to dream of a World Cup victory but they were soon brought crashing back down to earth as they conceded four goals without reply, crashing out in the process. Meanwhile, Morocco have put themselves in an excellent place to progress to the knockouts.

All three of their victories have come against European nations (also beating Portugal in 1986 and Scotland in 1998). Canada have been eliminated from the 2022 World Cup, having lost their first two matches. They have now lost all five of their World Cup games in total, with only El Salvador (6) playing more games while losing on each occasion. This will be Morocco’s fifth FIFA World Cup game against a non-European nation, with the Atlas Lions losing each of their four previous such games (vs Peru, Saudi Arabia, Brazil and Iran).
This will be Canada’s first match against an African nation since October 2016, when they lost 4-0 to Morocco in Marrakech, with Hakim Ziyech scoring a brace. Canada’s only previous competitive match against a side from Africa saw them lose 2-0 to Cameroon in the Confederations Cup in 2001. Morocco earned only their third ever win at the World Cup last time out against Belgium, in what was their 18th game (D6 L9).
As for Canada, they are already out but they did manage to score their first-ever World Cup goal at the weekend. John Herdman’s side will be hoping they can pick up their first win ever in the competition in their last game before heading home. What’s at stake? Very different things for both sides. Already-eliminated Canada are playing purely for pride as they cannot escape from Group F in the final match. Morocco, on the other hand, will book their place in the knockouts with a win or a draw in this game. There are actually a couple of ways that they can make it through if they lose. A win for Croatia against Belgium would send Morocco through regardless of their result.
A tight, cagey goalless draw with Croatia was followed up by a brilliant 2-0 win against a deeply disappointing Belgium side. Should Regragui’s side make it beyond Group F, it will be just the second time in their history that they have reached the last-16. The only other time was all the way back in 1986. Morocco: Sofyan Amrabat, Abdelhamid Sabiri.
Morocco have made 41 clearances as a team during this year’s World Cup, the most of any team in Group F; central defender Romain Saïss has made 15 of those clearances himself, including 11 of their 21 in the victory against Belgium on MD2. Despite sitting bottom of Group F with no points, Canada have attempted 30 shots across their two matches, which is 11 more than any other side in the group. Nonetheless, only five of those shots have been on target, which is the fewest in the group. Morocco have kept a clean sheet in each of their last six games in all competitions, now going 622 minutes without conceding since Lyle Foster’s strike for South Africa in June. Should they keep a clean sheet in this game, they will be the first African side not to concede a goal in their first three matches at a single World Cup. Morocco are looking to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for only the second time, after 1986, with this their sixth participation overall.
